Cancer is a complex group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. It can arise in almost any organ or tissue, such as the lung, breast, skin, or bone, when normal control mechanisms that regulate cell growth and death malfunction. These changes are typically the result of a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, including smoking, dietary habits, and exposure to toxins or radiation. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissues and can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems in a process known as metastasis. Treatment varies depending on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or combinations thereof. Early detection and advances in treatment have improved survival rates for many types of cancer.
