Antibiotics are a class of drugs used to prevent and treat bacterial infections by either killing bacteria or inhibiting their growth. Discovered in the early 20th century, with penicillin being the first widely used antibiotic introduced in the 1940s, antibiotics have revolutionized medicine by making once lethal infections treatable. They are crucial in a variety of medical settings, ranging from routine surgeries to chemotherapy and care for chronic diseases. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics have led to a significant public health issue: antibiotic resistance. This occurs when bacteria evolve mechanisms to withstand the drugs designed to kill them, leading to more difficult-to-treat infections and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. As a result, there is a growing emphasis on the responsible use of antibiotics in both human and veterinary medicine and on the development of new types of antibiotics and alternative treatments to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
