Browsing: Inflammation
Inflammation is a vital biological response of the immune system to protect the body from infection and injury. It occurs when tissues are damaged by bacteria, trauma, toxins, heat, or any other cause. The damaged cells release chemicals including histamine, bradykinin, and prostaglandins, which cause blood vessels to leak fluid into the tissues, leading to the characteristic signs of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling, and pain. This response is intended to isolate and eliminate the injurious stimuli and begin the healing process. While acute inflammation is typically short-lived and beneficial, chronic inflammation can lead to a host of diseases, such as arthritis, heart disease, and various autoimmune disorders. Chronic inflammation is problematic as it signifies a prolonged immune response where inflammation becomes a persistent condition, potentially damaging healthy tissue and altering normal physiological processes.
