It is a fools errand to try to stop the eventual conversion of the buried organic material back into the carbon dioxide from which it was made. The one thing that is constant in Nature is change. To the extent that humans can influence the rate of change, the emphasis should be on predicting the impacts and mitigating the negative impacts on people likely to experience the effects. It is questionable whether the problem is actually caused by humans. However, in any event, it is humans that will be most impacted. Nature will adapt regardless.

It rarely gets mentioned that the equivalence is for equal weights of gases with different molecular weights. When compared on the basis of mole-fraction (PPM-V) the difference is only about 12X.
