Global warming refers to the long-term rise in Earth’s average surface temperature due to human activities, primarily the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, a process known as the greenhouse effect, which is a natural phenomenon crucial for life on Earth by keeping the planet warm enough to sustain life. However, human activities, notably the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas, as well as deforestation and industrial processes, have amplified this effect, leading to higher temperatures. The consequences of global warming are far-reaching and include more frequent and severe weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves, rising sea levels due to melting polar ice and expanding warm seawater, and disrupted ecosystems and wildlife patterns. Addressing global warming requires international cooperation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, alongside efforts in adaptation and mitigation to manage the impacts on human and natural systems.
